If you experience incessant, throbbing pain in one or more of your teeth, you may have a tooth infection or an abscessed tooth. Infections and abscesses are usually the result of a deep cavity caused by severe tooth decay, gum disease, or a severe injury to a tooth that cracks the enamel.
When bacteria get into cavities or cracks in your teeth, it can infect the pulp and nerve inside of your teeth and cause severe pain. If the infection is left untreated, a pocket of pus called an abscess forms, causing even more discomfort. If the abscess is left untreated, the infection could spread to the jaw, other teeth, and surrounding tissues.
Root canal - If your tooth infection has gotten to the point where it causes you severe pain and/or has produced an abscess, you may need a root canal. Click here to learn more about root canal treatments.
Dental implants - If your tooth is severely infected, it may be so damaged that it cannot be saved with a root canal. The tooth may need to be removed and replaced with an implant and crown that looks and functions just like a natural tooth. Click here to learn more about dental implants.
