If you experience incessant, throbbing pain in one or more of your teeth, you may have a tooth infection or an abscessed tooth. Infections and abscesses are usually the result of a deep cavity caused by severe tooth decay, gum disease, or a severe injury to a tooth that cracks the enamel.
When bacteria get into cavities or cracks in your teeth, it can infect the pulp and nerve inside of your teeth and cause severe pain. If the infection is left untreated, a pocket of pus called an abscess forms, causing even more discomfort. If the abscess is left untreated, the infection could spread to the jaw, other teeth, and surrounding tissues.
